Gaming is a hobby that can require a large time investment.  So how is a gamer supposed to stay in shape?  With this final entry in our Healthy Gamer series, we explore ways to game comfortably.

PC Gaming

PC gamers kind of get it in the shorts when it comes to gaming for long periods of time.  Because of the input devices used, you have to remain upright for long periods of time.  Despite the numerous recommendations regarding ergonomics, I find that spending a little extra money on a top-quality chair provides the biggest improvement to your comfort.  Make sure you buy a chair with armrests and adjustable height; having a high back instead of the normal “office-chair” style makes a huge difference as well.  If you plan on watching movies at your computer desk, I would also suggest you find a chair that can tilt. My own chair looks very similar to this one, except the portion you sit on is a little bit longer.  If you are looking for a new desk chair, Amazon has a decent selection.

If you are looking for a super comfortable setup and don’t mind taking out a loan, you can’t go wrong with the Gravitonus Workstation.  Just make sure you pick up an ottoman!

Another vital part of gaming comfortably on a PC is the mouse that you use; I’m a big fan of trackballs.  In addition to the obvious benefits,  trackballs require less room than a normal mouse, and are very easy to maintain.  I recommend the Kensington Expert Mouse, which we reviewed here.

Console Gamers

Console gamers have a bit more flexibility when it comes to gaming comfortably.  Recliners, sofas, and papasan chairs allow for a wide range of options.  Your space and budget are the most determining factors, but it’s almost worth spending a little less on your TV and a little more on what you will be sitting on.  After all, what’s the point of a really nice flatscreen if you are going to be sitting on a milk crate?  If space is an issue, a recliner or a papsan are your best choices.  Papasan chairs have the added advantage of making portable gaming and reading more comfortable, while recliners offer more variety and extras.

If you have the space, go with a couch.  Try to find a couch that makes losing random items difficult, and also look for overstuffed armrests.  Try to stay away from no-name couches, as it can be hard to find replacement cushions and covers for them.  Make sure to grab a couple of good quality blankets as well, but stay away from anything fuzzy or fleece-like.  These types of blankets tend to generate a lot of static electricity during drier weather, which you obviously don’t want when interacting with electronics.  I find that a cotton comforter for a twin size bed works perfectly…aside from being machine washable and generally being static free, they are more than big enough for two people to share.

We hope you have enjoyed our healthy gamer series! Sadly, this is the end…but have no fear, new weekly features are just around the corner!
