Rainy Day Movie is a feature here on Living With a Nerd that provides short insights into movies and series that you should save for a rainy day. In this edition of Rainy Day Movie, we explore the fantastic PBS mini-series Liberty! The American Revolution.
Originally airing in 1997, Liberty! is a six-episode documentary miniseries about the American Revolution and the events that lead up to and followed it. Because most of the information is presented via monologues (which themselves were directly taken from journal entries and letters found from the time period), this feels less like a documentary and more like a series of interviews. A large variety of actors deliver the lines, some of them quite famous.
Due to the nature of the presentation, this documentary provides a unique look at a time period that we have all learned about in school. There are some portions with historians, but it’s refreshing to get the perspective of “people” who were actually there and lived through it. Reenactments of scenes, as well as close-ups of famous drawings and paintings abound. Somehow, episodes seem to fly by, and you will get through the whole thing faster than you think.
If you have an interest in the American Revolution, feel like you should know about how America came to be, want to refresh your memory, or just plain enjoy knowing stuff, Liberty! is you best choice for insight into the time period. It is well made, interesting, and a great conversation catalyst. Highly recommended.
