@WilliamBraski - PS3 games cannot be pirated. So far, the PlayStation encryption has only been partially cracked. The cost of Blu-ray discs also discourage piracy anyways.

On the other hand, Xbox360 is widely pirated (at least, where I live). In my country (in SE Asia), hardly anyone buys the PS3, because only the 360 has pirated games...

As for the decline in PC gaming, I think it's less about piracy than about a ready consumer base. Just look at sales for games and see which platforms all the top sales go to - either the 360 or the Wii. The PC hardly figures.

But really, is PC gaming dead? Don't think so. Just ask Blizzard.

I completely agree with you, PC gaming is as healthy a culture as it has ever been...but major release PC game SALES are declining, which was the point of this article.

Check back in tomorrow for the other side of the spectrum...why PC gaming culture is expanding at an exponential rate :-) Keep in mind, PC gaming culture and major release PC gaming sales are two very different things!

Hogwash. A downloaded (pirated) game isn't = a lost sale. You can't lose money you haven't been given. That mentality is part of the problem.

Also, many people I know have modded Xbox 360's and hardly buy games for it. You can mod a Wii and PS3 and play illicit downloads as well. On the consoles, all you have to do is mod it once, burn disks, play. Pirating games for PC is a crap shoot, at best of finding a NoCD crack for the latest versions, having versions match your friends for online games that still work. Consoles are far easier to pirate for.

I think it's more that pubs see consoles as a walled Garden of Eden. They can get more from them (especially for their 59.99 prices), supposedly. But like I said above, they're fooling themselves if they think it's as locked down as they wanna believe.

The PC = too open and out of their control. They sell you the content and want to be able to take it away or force you to use it however.

But is PC gaming really declining? We just got SupCom2, Mass Effect 2, DA:O, Civ5 on the way, etc.

One minor market effect may be WoW. Who knows if it has made a measurable difference, but there are people that don't play other PC games anymore and spend their time solely with WoW.
