A few words about truth and cake….
Posted under GamingWell, here’s my first Blog post, and as much as I want it to be something deep and thought-provoking, I am going to save that one for later. Instead, I’m going to tout the glories of Portal. I know that it came out waaayyy back in October, and it almost looks like it was tacked onto the Orange Box as an afterthought. And to be honest, that’s what I thought about it. I was primarily interested in Team Fortress 2, and was only mildly interested in the other offerings. But I recently played through it again from start to finish in one sitting, with the volume turned up (this is key) and nothing to distract me. While I enjoyed the puzzle solving aspect of the game the first time through, I had music or the television on in the background and was not paying complete attention. This was a terrible mistake. First and foremost, the puzzle solving aspect in the game is amazing. The Portal Gun creates and establishes an amazingly complete play mechanic that I think will be considered innovative even in years to come. The level design is flawless, and the flow of the game and difficulty curve is accessible to gamers of almost any skill level. But it is the dialog of GladOS, the computer running the “experiment” laced throughout the game that makes it truly amazing. At once helpful, disparaging, and devious, “she” may be the darkest, funniest, most demented antagonist ever created, and is a joy to listen to. The game’s phenomenal scripting and surprisingly powerful soundtrack propel what is already an amazingly innovative puzzle game into an instant classic. While the cake may be a lie, it is moist, delicious, challenging, intelligent, and most of all an unforgettable gaming experience.
